Unexpected finding
Recently, YouTube suggested me as the algorithm always does, a video of a trans content creator into my feed. At first, I didn't think much about it and paid little attention. The specific topic of that video didn't catch my eye right away, so I scrolled right past it.
But the algorithm is persistent. Day after day, it kept serving up her videos, as if to say, "I know you’ll find her content interesting, maybe not the last subject but how about this other one?"
Eventually, the algorithm won, I finally clicked on a video, and ended up pleasantly surprised. The topic was genuinely interesting, and she was warm, engaging, funny and very amiable. Naturally, once I clicked on that video, YouTube flooded me with more of her content.
Anyways, if at this point you are wondering who I’m talking about, it was none other than Ashley Barron, better known as “AlsoAshley”. I’d bet the vast majority of people reading this already know exactly who she is, but to be completely honest, I didn't.
Or at least, I thought I didn't. Years ago, while secretly searching the internet to make sense of my own identity, I had actually stumbled across some of her content. Back then, she looked slightly different, enough to not recognize her right away. She’s strikingly beautiful and when her videos first popped up, her voice and appearance were so effortlessly feminine that I initially assumed she was a cute cis girl ally speaking up for our community.
My real surprise came when the algorithm recommended a video specifically about her voice training journey. That sparked my curiosity, so I began reading up on her backstory. Seeing older photos brought everything rushing back. I realized I had seen her years ago, back when we were both at very different stages of life.
Her physical and personal evolution is remarkable. From the little bit I found, her story is very interesting. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you about it, you all probably already know way, way, way more about her than I do. While I don't follow her social platforms or back her Patreon (I’m sorry to admit it and I apologize if she ever finds herself reading this post), learning how Ashley came to be resonated with me deeply.
Ok so why am I writing about AlsoAshley? What is the purpose? Well, I can definitely relate to parts of her journey. While I never viewed my femininity as a kink or a drive to look pretty for arousal at my own reflection, I would be lying if I said there aren't overlapping emotions. I guess in some way we all find exhilarating and stimulating looking in the mirror and seeing the woman inhabiting our body looking fabulous in gorgeous lingerie. In those moments, feeling a spark of attraction toward your own femininity is just part of the experience.
Looking at where she is now, I feel a healthy, positive kind of envy. Of course I don't know her full story, the struggles or rough patches she had to navigate to get to this point in her life, like many of our own stories. But she now seems to have a life that many of us only dreamed of.
Who wouldn't want to make a living being their authentic, feminine self? To dress up, feel stunning, sexy or even kinky and express your identity every day and get paid for it? Sure, working as a creator probably comes with its own unique caveats, but from my current and limited point of view, living openly as your true self seems pretty awesome.
On top of that, her androgynous nature is something I can't help but admire. Being able to switch between presentations with such an ease and achieve a feminine look with minimal effort is something many of us with masculine frames would have loved to inherit. Currently I believe she’s on HRT, but her earlier photos are proof.
At the end of the day, I'm just happy she found the courage to set aside her fears and live authentically. Her path to self discovery might be different from mine, but it probably sure echoes the journey of so many trans women. She’s another bright, amazing girl navigating this world as her best self and helping shine a light for the rest of us along the way.
